Canadians are getting bigger and heavier.  Being overweight and obese is a major risk factor in many illnesses, including heart disease and cancer. The trick to losing weight is quite simple: calories in<calories out. Basically you have to burn more calories than you are consuming, or take in fewer calories than you are spending. Here are some simple ways to reduce your daily caloric intake without much effort:

  • Instead of 2 creams and 2 sugars in your coffee, try 2 milks only
  • Switch to low fat cottage cheese or yogurt instead of sour cream
  • Cheese is good for you, but is also high in fat.  Consume in moderation!
  • Remember that a portion of meat/fish is the size of a deck of cards, not more!
  • Cut down on the beer, wine, pop and juice, and you can cut down on empty calories
  • Many of us confuse hunger and thirst. Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Keep a food diary. You will be surprised to see how much you eat when you see it written down!
